IDO 704 Scientific Ethics and the Responsible Conduct of Research
Utilizing lectures and discussions, this course will provide participants with an opportunity to review the basic principles for responsible conduct of scientific research. The topics to be reviewed include the rationale for developing and practicing professional values, and the scientist’s ethical responsibilities to society, their research subjects, and their peers. Issues concerning responsible practices in laboratory work, publication, handling conflicts of interest, and confidentiality will be discussed, as well as more general contemporary issues related to careers in science. Each topic area is supplemented by seminar-style discussion and contemporary readings. Participants (graduate and postdoctoral fellows) will be expected to actively participate in the seminars, as well as in a final presentation on a chosen topic.
