MED 4345 General Internal Medicine Selective
The internal medicine selective occurs over four weeks, exposing students to a broad range of adult medical problems and preventative services. Under the direct supervision of their attending physicians, students will admit patients to the hospital, write notes, and develop case presentation skills. Students are expected to interact with consultation services, including surgery, podiatry, OB/GYN, and infectious diseases. Students will refine their differential diagnosis skills in resource-limited settings while ensuring the highest quality of care. The rotation will include the care of some critically ill patients. It may also allow the student outpatient time in subspecialty clinics if desired. Frequent one-on-one teaching and coaching will be provided by attending physicians. Students are expected to do Journal Club presentations, in addition to many patient clinical case presentations.
Those rotating at Indian Health Centers will be exposed to the cultural diversity of the many tribes who seek care and the unique disease burden that affects Native populations.
