MPO 1002 Public Policy in the Context of Military and Federal Health Care
The focus of this course is to provide the students with an appreciation for how public policy is established and modified through: Personal interactions with senior individuals who are/have been involved in shaping our nation’s public policies; “Hands-on” field experience, such as spending time with an Administrative Agency, their Congressional representative, a policy “think tank,” or professional association event; and Drafting two action decision memos and a longer (5 page +) in-depth policy paper on a topic of their choice. By the end of the course, attendees will be able to: 1) Develop an appreciation for the critical nature of interdisciplinary collaboration, as well as the substantive and historical rationale behind evolving social policies; 2) Explore how they themselves can “make a difference” in policy areas of their own personal interest as they continue in their career; 3) Identify rationales and processes for public policy; 4) Explain the purpose, function, methods and process of a policy analysis; 5) Appreciate the interface between research and policy planning, implementation and evaluation; 6) Conduct a Policy Analysis in an area of personal professional interest.
