PMR 3100 Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation Clerkship

The PM&R Clerkship is a combination of outpatient and consultation service where students evaluate and manage patients as part of a team consisting of other medical students, residents, and staff members.  The PM&R Clerkship is primarily offered at Walter Reed (WRNMMC), however students may be able to arrange rotations at other MTFs on a case by case basis.  Students participate in teaching rounds, conferences, lectures/seminars.  The goal of the clerkship is to prepare students to interact with and medically manage patients with all levels of ability and disability.

Students will be exposed to several PM&R subspecialty clinics to include: Traumatic Brain Injury, Amputee, Interventional Pain Management, Sports Medicine, MSK Ultrasound, Electromyography, and Wheelchair Clinics.  On the inpatient consult service, students will have the opportunity to participate in the interdisciplinary management of patients with various debilitating injuries to include spinal cord injury, stroke, traumatic brain injury and limb loss.  Specifically, the overarching goals are:

  1. Learn to focus on function and the functional consequence of illness
  2. Improve comfort level and experience working with patients with disabilities
  3. Participate in a comprehensive and interdisciplinary approach to clinical care
  4. Improve medical knowledge in the following domains:
