PSY 4200 Psychiatry: Individual Selective

This course is limited to students who were unable to fully meet but not fail the requirements of the Psychiatry Clerkship, designed to offer supplementary training and experience in psychiatry at a level that would normally be fulfilled by a standard 3rd year psychiatry clerkship. It may be completed during the core clerkship year or in the post-clerkship period pending advance coordination with the Department of Psychiatry and with the Office for Student Affairs.

Students will perform at least two (2) comprehensive psychiatric assessments of psychiatric inpatients or outpatients, and submit a BRIEF but comprehensive written report (to include a defensible formulation, differential diagnosis, and treatment plan) in conjunction with an oral presentation of each to the program attending, followed by review of each report by the preceptor if they are not the assigned attending; demonstrate understanding of DSM5 diagnostic criteria for major psychiatric disorders as part of a complete differential diagnosis; develop an understanding of the multidisciplinary approach to patient assessment, treatment planning, therapeutic interventions, and disposition planning; learn common treatment modalities for psychiatric inpatients and outpatients; and successfully pass the USMLE NBME if not already passed.
