MPO 530 Foundations of Intervention: Group Psychotherapy
The theories and basic concepts of group psychotherapy will be presented during the first ten weeks of class through lecture, articles discussed in class, and videotapes of group therapy with discussion. The course will culminate with student project presentations in the final weeks with projects representing a sample therapy session demonstrating a synthesis of group principles applied to a specific area. By the end of the course attendees will be able to: 1) Describe the basic stages of group psychotherapy; 2) Describe the basic concepts of group dynamics and the process related to group treatments; 3) Describe the impact of the group leader on group process and how different techniques foster group cohesiveness; 4) Describe ethical issues that are paramount to conducting group psychotherapy.
