MPO 536 Cultural Diversity: Research and Practice
This is a graduate level Psychology course that focuses on understanding issues of Cultural Diversity as they relate to the practice of psychology. Students will be expected to utilize critical thinking skills to explore and examine the constructs of ethnicity and minority/majority status especially as they influence human behavior. This course seeks to increase students understanding of the ways in which culture mediates variables such as age, ethnicity, race, gender, sexual orientation, ableness, in counseling and research in psychology. The objectives are: 1) Students will develop a working knowledge of concepts related to diversity including ethnicity, culture, gender and minority/majority status; 2) Students will explore the interface of socio-cultural context with individual and group identity; 3) Students will be able to apply this knowledge to counseling with diverse client groups with an emphasis on trauma therapy.
