GSO 4210 Labor and Delivery Days and Night Float

Students will be an integral part of the Labor and Delivery Team. Their teams will be made up of OB/GYN residents at multiple levels of training and attending obstetrician/gynecologist. During this rotation, the students will participate in the care of patients in the inpatient and triage settings. While on L&D, they will participate in the evaluation of patients in triage, as well as, be involved in intrapartum and postpartum care. They will have the opportunity to participate in vaginal and cesarean deliveries. Other opportunities for education include morning rounds and departmental conferences. By the conclusion of the rotation, the student should be able to: Evaluate pregnant women presenting with common triage complaints including labor (term and preterm), third trimester bleeding, rupture of membranes (term and preterm), and hypertension. Describe the normal course of labor, as well as, identify abnormalities that develop during labor. Discuss the normal maternal physiologic changes of the postpartum period and counsel patients on post-partum care and contraception.

Prerequisite

Students should have successfully passed the GSO core clerkship (GSO3200) prior to enrolling in this course. Exceptions can be made on a case by case basis at the discretion of the GSO education committee.
