HPE 555 Teaching Methods

This self-paced course is an application of the educational concepts, methods, and theories that contribute to the design and delivery of effective instruction in Health Professions Education. The course will explore contemporary models for educating health care professionals in various settings: classrooms, small groups, inpatient settings, and ambulatory settings. It will also examine ways in which effective instruction and assessment support student learning in the health professions. Instructional methods will include small and large group teaching methods as well as simulation, collaborative projects, and individual projects.

 

Course Goals: Build the Toolbox: Learners will incorporate a variety of instructional methods to address their learner's needs. Use the Toolbox: Learners will design a teaching session based on a needs assessment that aligns objectives, teaching methods, and assessment.

Learning Objectives

  1. Determine an appropriate amount of material for students to master in a teaching session.
  2. Defend teaching methods chosen based on actionable and measurable objectives, assessment, philosophy of teaching and learning, and available resources: Align a needs assessment with formative and summative assessment.
  3. Align a needs assessment with formative and summative assessment.
  4. Implement effective presentation and instructional skills (e.g., learner engagement, transitions, session closing, etc.).
  5. Critically review and reflect on relevant literature, instructional design, and teaching methods.
