PMO 694 Global Health Disparities & Social Determinants of Health

This course will provide students with an opportunity to gain an in-depth understanding of how social factors contribute to racial/ethnic, socioeconomic, gender, age and disease-specific disparities in both global health and health care. A seminar design, incorporating scholarly inquiry, will facilitate achievement of course objectives. Students will complete U.S. and non-U.S. readings in global health disparities and social and cultural determinants of health; explore frameworks useful in addressing global health disparities and social determinants of health; analyze bias in global health data collection and reporting methods; propose a conceptual approach for addressing a health disparity in a specific population group with relevance to the military/federal or global health system; write a paper addressing a specific disparity from a population or global health perspective (including problem identification; a review of the existing literature; and a proposed conceptual framework that explores the reasons both known and unknown for this disparity); and provide a brief presentation based on the paper.
