PMR 3100 Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation Clerkship
The PM&R Clerkship Selective introduces MS3s to the branch of medicine emphasizing the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of patients whose functional abilities have been temporarily or permanently impaired. The goal of the clerkship is to prepare students to interact with and medically manage patients with all levels of ability and disability. Students will be exposed to several PM&R subspecialty clinics to include: Traumatic Brain Injury, Amputee, Interventional Pain Management, Sports Medicine, MSK Ultrasound, Electromyography, and Wheelchair Clinics. On the inpatient consult service, students will have the opportunity to participate in the interdisciplinary management of patients with various debilitating injuries to include spinal cord injury, stroke, traumatic brain injury and limb loss. Specifically, the overarching goals are:
- Understand the functional consequence of illness;
- Develop competency in the performance of the physiatric history and physical;
- Improve comfort level and experience working with patients with disabilities such as amputations;
- Participate in a comprehensive and interdisciplinary approach to clinical care;
- Improve medical knowledge in the following domains:
- Attention to biomechanics and kinesiology;
- Secondary prevention of medical complications in the rehabilitation setting;
- Unique medical issues in the disabled population.
