COMF 730 Pharmacotherapeutics in Clinical Dentistry
Instruction in Pharmacotherapeutics in management of dental patients is obtained through a one-week course during the junior year of the 2-year residency program. Lecture topics include the spectrum of pain control, pharmacology of intravenous sedation, anesthesia treatment planning and monitoring, reversal agents and local anesthetics. Additional lecture topics are postoperative analgesia with specific emphasis on nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory and narcotic medications, antibiotic use in odontogenic infections, management of hemostasis, the anticoagulated patient, pain and anxiety management for the pediatric patient and treatment considerations for the geriatric patient. The resident applies this instruction by titration of various intravenous sedation medications while treating several clinical patients during the course.
