MCO 602 Molecular Parasitology

The goals of this course are to identify fundamental concepts in parasitism, with a focus on molecular pathways that enable parasitism. The course emphasizes scientific themes, including topics such as the definition and advantages of parasitic lifecycles, immunology at the host-parasite interface, the molecular biology behind var gene complexes, how worms can alter host responses to suit their own survival, parasites as initiators of malignant transformation, and parasite ecology. The course also provides a basic overview and foundational knowledge of the biology, immunology, epidemiology, clinical manifestations, public health impact, and control/prevention measures for the major helminth and protozoan pathogens that cause disease in humans. Instructors also provide tips and guidance on grant-writing. Assessments are based on in-class presentations, short take-home written assignments, in-class participation, and a short written research proposal.
