MPO 1003 Advanced Public Policy

This course is designed for students who are interested in in exploring, in more depth, the role of research in public policy as it relates to population health. This advanced elective course will be a discussion-based course developed to further expose students to a wide range of policy options, across different subject matter content areas (e.g., health policy, employment policy, Department of Defense (DoD) family issues, impact of the media, etc.) in order that they can explore the overarching policy process, regardless of subject matter. The course will assist students in developing their policy interests within specific healthcare arenas, obtain educational and professional opportunities to further clarify these interests, identify suitable career/professional opportunities, and provide an avenue for in-depth discussion regarding this process. This course can be used to supplement MPO 1002/GSN 712. By the end of the course, attendees will be able to: 1) Identify rationales and processes for public policy within a specific healthcare area; 2) Explain the purpose, function, methods and process of a policy development within a specific healthcare area; 3) Appreciate the interface between research and policy planning, implementation and evaluation within a specific healthcare area; 4) Identify career/professional areas suitable for policy exploration within a specific healthcare arena.
