PSY 3430 Forensic Psychiatry Selective

Students participate in teaching rounds, conferences, lectures/seminars under the supervision of WRNMMC Forensic Psychiatry faculty and fellows in the evaluation and management of adult patients with legal and forensic concerns. A similar course is available to 4th year students, and 4th year students will be given more responsibility and independence than students on a clerkship-level rotation at this site.

Goals and Objectives:

  1. Understand the tenets of capacity assessments in several areas of forensics: medical decision-making, participating in legal proceedings/standing trial, and criminal responsibility.
  2. Participate and assist with background research, interviewing, and preparing written forensic assessments under direct supervision of the Forensic Psychiatry team.
  3. Develop an understanding of the roles and relationships between forensic psychiatrists and the legal system.
  4.  Perform at least two comprehensive psychiatric assessments of patients on this service, and submit a BRIEF but comprehensive written report (to include a defensible formulation, differential diagnosis, and treatment plan) in conjunction with an oral presentation of each to the program attending, followed by review of each report by the program attending.

Prep: This course can only be taken AFTER completion of the Psychiatry Clerkship, yet is open throughout clerkship-year to students who have successfully completed their Psychiatry Clerkship (after R1)
