HPE 912 Independent Study in HPE

Under the mentorship of a faculty member, learners register for this course to receive credit for extra work on a research project, thesis topic, and/or other learning activity. Such work typically requires independent learning, writing, and study time, as well as face-to-face meetings with a faculty member. The objective of the independent study is often related to acquiring a specific methodological skill; broadly speaking, however, the independent study is meant to expand learners’ knowledge and skills in a specific area of Health Professions Education. Enrolled learners must submit a study plan to the course director for approval prior to starting the independent study. The study plan must include a set of specific learning objectives to be achieved upon completion of the course. While a learner is working on their research they may register for MED 912 Independent Study. The number of credits to register for can be calculated by using the following equation: each credit constitutes 3 hours of work per week for a 12- week term and 6 hours of work per week for a 6-week term. Therefore, registering for 3 credits of Independent Study would mean a learner would be working on their research for approximately 9 hours per week.
