PMO 1016 Infectious Diseases of Public Health Importance
The course is a survey of the most important global infectious disease threats with emphasis on the developing world, as a less clinically-focused alternative to PMO560, the Principles and Practice of Tropical Medicine, and will cover a broader array of conditions than addressed in PMO514, Epidemiology and Control of Infectious Diseases. It will encompass the basic and pathology of these infections, scope and burden of disease in affected populations, and strategies for their control and prevention. Although treatment will be discussed, the course will not focus on diagnosis and management of the individual patient. This course is tailored for students who require sufficient knowledge of major infectious diseases to support future work with global health programs intended to control or eradicate these diseases, but do not require or desire in-depth study of clinical management (diagnoses and treatment) of these conditions. Experienced clinicians can also benefit from the course emphasis on disease control in populations as opposed to treatment of individuals.
