PSY 4430 Forensic Psychiatry Elective
Students will participate in a variety of medical-legal evaluations to include assessments of competency to stand trial, criminal responsibility, and competency to make medical decisions. Didactics will address these issues as well as landmark medical-legal cases and military unique legal and administrative evaluations.
This course occurs during the Clerkship year and 4th year.
This course can only be taken AFTER completion of the Psychiatry Clerkship.
This rotation allows 1 (one) student/rotation, with some rotations not being available.

Goals and Objectives:
1. Understand the tenets of capacity assessments in several areas of forensics: medical decision-making, participating in legal proceedings/standing trial, and criminal responsibility
2. Participate and assist with background research, interviewing, and preparing written forensic assessments under direct supervision of the Forensic Psychiatry team
3. Develop an understanding of the roles and relationships between forensic psychiatrists and the legal system
