NURS 8852 Military Women in Contemporary Society
This interdisciplinary, elective course addresses issues of relevance to military women from a social, political, psychological, and behavioral perspective. Using relevant scientific literature, contemporary film and literature, and guest speakers, we will explore the history of women in the military to include the explicit inclusion of sex in doctrine and policies affecting military women. The impact of social and political changes will be addressed in relation to contemporary topics including: (1) women’s sex-specific health issues, (2) the impact of deployment, (3) military work environments, and (4) mental health. The course provides a forum for an in-depth and scholarly exploration of sex-based issues from multiple perspectives to help prepare both clinicians and scientists to take an informed leadership role in today’s armed forces.
