NURS 7610 Acute and Chronic Pain Science and Practice

This course covers the biological, psychological, and social aspects of chronic and acute pain and its management from individualized, scientific, and interdisciplinary perspectives. Topics include the neurobiology of pain, psychosocial effects, assessment, pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatments, health policies, and inter-professional care models. The peripheral and central mechanisms of pain and the impact of genetics are also explored. The course addresses pain assessment and management for vulnerable populations and discusses various acute and chronic pain syndromes across the care continuum. It emphasizes the use of current research and evidence-based guidelines for inter-professional collaboration and clinical decision-making to improve pain care and outcomes.
