SUR 4670 Plastic Surgery Sub-Internship
The purpose of this sub-internship rotation is to provide an immersive experience with the practice of plastic surgery in both the outpatient and inpatient environment. Students will be expected to demonstrate a detailed understanding of the evaluation, medical, and surgical management of both common and complex problems in the practice of plastic and reconstructive surgery. Sub-interns will be expected to participate in the care of their patients at the intern level, including a requirement for call at the frequency of the most junior resident on the service. The goal of this course is to prepare students interested in both surgery and primary care with the opportunity to experience the specialty in preparation for internship and residency. Plastic surgery helps restore form and function for patients, and is a rewarding practice of medicine as it significantly improves the quality of patients’ lives. Plastic surgeons also assist other services for wound healing challenges and frequently work with many other specialties in a multidisciplinary fashion. Plastic surgery includes craniofacial surgery, hand surgery, microsurgery, cancer reconstruction, burn and wound management as well as cosmetic surgery. Plastic surgeons operate on all parts of the body and care for patients of all ages from newborn to geriatric patients.
