MED 3100 Aerospace Medicine Selective
The aerospace medicine selective occurs over four weeks and introduces students to aviation medicine. The Naval Aerospace Medicine Institute (NAMI) is a detachment of the Naval Medicine Operational Training Command (NMOTC). NAMI is the Navy’s center of excellence for Aerospace Medicine, located onboard NAS Pensacola, home to the Navy Demonstration Team, the Blue Angels. Expected activities during the rotation include: meeting with multiple practicing flight surgeons at two operational training air wings; rotating through internal medicine, mental health, ophthalmology, otorhinolaryngology, and neurology clinics with an aerospace medicine focus; learning to apply aerospace medicine theories to common medical problems; performing physical exams on aviation applicants and evaluating personnel for disqualifying conditions; gaining familiarity with the application of physical standards for aviation and the waiver process by observing medical decision-making and deliberations at a weekly Clinical Advisory meeting; participating in weekly Residency in Aerospace Medicine academic seminars. No rotations are available in Nov., Dec. or Jan.
