MED 3106 Endocrinology Selective
The endocrine selective occurs over four weeks, exposing students to a broad range of endocrinopathies and preventative services. Students will be exposed to a wide array of patients throughout from young adults to the elderly. Rotators will see patients in the outpatient endocrine clinic with occasional consults on the inpatient ward under the supervision of a board-certified endocrinologist. In the outpatient clinic, students can expect to encounter patients with abnormal serum electrolytes, pituitary dysfunction, secondary hypertension, hypoglycemia, diabetes (including pump/sensor management), metabolic bone disease, adrenal dysfunction, and thyroid disorders. Students may also encounter emergencies and critically ill patients, including diabetic ketoacidosis, hyperosmolar non-ketotic states, symptomatic hyper/hypocalcemia, and pituitary apoplexy. Training will focus on the physical exam of the endocrine system, including the thyroid exam, exposure to thyroid ultrasounds, thyroid biopsy, and interpretation of thyroid nuclear medicine studies and treatment with various hormone replacement regimens and the treatment of hormone excess syndromes.
