NSO 903 Neurobiology of Traumatic Brain Injury
This course will offer a thorough understanding of traumatic brain injury from both a clinical and basic science standpoint. Topics will include a discussion of the primary impact of injury, clinical diagnosis, treatment, aftercare, possible health problems associated with the injury, changes in brain bioenergetics, inflammatory responses, calcium dystasis, and electrophysiological changes. The goal is to integrate understanding the clinical treatment of injury with the underlying causes and mechanisms of injury. At the conclusion of the course, the student should have a broad. but deep, exposure to traumatic brain injury and fully understand how clinicians diagnose and treat brain injury, as well as the known or hypothesized mechanisms mediating injury, as well as future research directions.
