NURS 8829 Measurement in Nursing and Healthcare Research

This course focuses on measurement techniques and their application in nursing and healthcare research. Students will be introduced to classical and novel measurement theories and their integration across a variety of measurement outcomes. Approaches to analyze reliability, validity, and sensitivity of measurements will be presented. Course topics include psychometric principles and approaches to quantitative measurement; survey methods; guidelines for instrument construction; scaling and scoring techniques; response biases; problems with data quality; reporting for publication; and relationships between measurement and research ethics, cultural competency, and health disparities. Application of computational techniques will be included. This course is designed for doctoral students in nursing, public health, and medicine.
