OTA 1305 Principles of Occupational Therapy

Principles of Occupational Therapy is designed to introduce students to the foundational concepts and processes that underpin occupational therapy practice. This course provides a comprehensive overview of the occupational therapy process, encompassing evaluation, intervention, and outcomes. Students will explore the therapeutic use of self, the importance of evidence-based practice, and techniques for gathering information through interviews and occupational profiles. Furthermore, the course will introduce various assessment tools, methods for evaluating occupations, the use of assistive devices and technology, the significance of human behavior, and the role of purposeful activity in therapy. The course culminates in a focus on professional reasoning, where students will develop skills in analyzing occupations and activities, conducting performance analyses, and delivering professional presentations. Throughout the course, emphasis will be placed on understanding the theoretical framework that guides occupational therapy practice, including the selection of appropriate interventions and the documentation of outcomes. This course will equip students with the essential knowledge and skills necessary to contribute effectively as Occupational Therapy Assistants in diverse practice settings.
