OTA 1405 Physical Dysfunction II

Physical Dysfunction II builds upon foundational knowledge of occupational therapy practice and continues to explore physical impairments beyond Physical Dysfunction I, more specifically related to neurological conditions/impairments and the impact on occupational performance. This course emphasizes the assessment and treatment of clients with central and peripheral nervous system disorders, including degenerative neuromuscular disorders, spinal cord injury, traumatic brain injury, and cerebral vascular accident. Students will develop a strong understanding of neuroscience and neuroanatomy as it relates to functional mobility, activities of daily living (ADLs), and instrumental activities of daily living (IADLs). The course explores various sensorimotor intervention approaches, therapeutic exercises, and sensory integration techniques to enhance client participation and independence.

Through in-depth examination of specific neurological diagnoses, students in Physical Dysfunction II learn to analyze activity demands and adapt interventions to address client specific needs and goals. Emphasis is placed on developing proficiency in assessment and intervention related to ADLs, IADLs, functional mobility, and sensory processing. Students will apply principles of activity analysis and consider the interplay of body functions and performance skills in developing comprehensive treatment plans. The course fosters critical thinking skills and clinical reasoning necessary for effective occupational therapy intervention with individuals experiencing neurological dysfunction.
