NURS 7210 Psychotherapeutic Modalities

This course will: (1) provide students with foundational knowledge of selected evidence-based psychotherapeutic modalities consistent with the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) Essentials domains of Knowledge for Nursing Practice and Person-Centered Care; and (2) to develop core psychotherapeutic skills associated with each modality, adapted to the cultural, ethical, and professional contexts for Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioners. This course supports the development of PMHNP competencies in psychotherapeutic treatment, clinical decision-making, and interprofessional collaboration. Students will apply advanced critical thinking, differential diagnostic reasoning, and evidence-based practice to develop individualized treatment plans grounded in best practices and each client’s unique biopsychosocial, developmental, and cultural history. Emphasis is placed on role-appropriate implementation of psychotherapeutic interventions, as well as on clinical judgment regarding when direct intervention versus referral is indicated. This approach promotes preventive, secondary, and tertiary mental health interventions, with particular attention to military and federal health care settings.
