NURS 7225 Military Operational Mental Health for the Advanced Practice Nurse
This course builds on the PMHNP didactic sequence and prepares advanced practice nursing students to deliver comprehensive mental health care across military operational and garrison environments. Students apply core Combat and Operational Stress Control (COSC) principles and develop proficiency in mental health functions that support force health protection. The curriculum integrates interprofessional education with the School of Medicine and Medical and Clinical Psychology programs to establish a unified “Mental Behavioral Health at Bushmaster” framework. Learners participate in the Military Contingency Medicine training alongside medical students to integrate into platoons and develop shared operational competencies. Students then operationalize the nine COSC principles during the Bushmaster field practicum, working in austere environments to deliver mission-aligned mental health support. These experiences foster advanced clinical judgment, interprofessional collaboration, and mission-focused mental health capability.
