PRC 2004 Gastrointestinal, Hepatobiliary, Hematologic, Metabolism and Nutrition Module

This module focuses on developing a fundamental understanding of the mechanisms of gastrointestinal functions and how the digestive system processes food in order to extract nutrients for growth and development. Students learn to describe the pathophysiology underlying the major disease states that affect the digestive and hepatobiliary systems, including methods used for diagnosis and treatment. The module also includes studies of hematologic disorders, metabolic diseases, and an exploration of the inadequate and excessive ingestion of calories and the importance of nutrition in hospital settings and in unique military environments. Finally, students learn to recognize and diagnose common conditions, so they can prepare for subsequent responsibilities in patient management.
