PSY 3545 Military Community Psychiatry Selective

This course occurs only during the Clerkship year.

Students DO NOT need to complete the Psychiatry Clerkship to participate.

This course allows students to explore their interest in Military and Community Psychiatry. It is an introduction to Military Community Hospital Psychiatry. Students will work with military psychiatrists in clinic, inpatient ward, and hospital consults, as well as on community and unit site visits.

 

This rotation allows 1(one) student/rotation, with some rotations not being available.

*Students must confirm enrollment with Psychiatry Course Coordinators (psychiatrycourses@usuhs.edu) to assure availability.

 

Goals and Objectives:

1. Perform at least two comprehensive psychiatric assessments of psychiatric inpatients or outpatients, and submit a BRIEF but comprehensive written report (to include a defensible formulation, differential diagnosis, and treatment plan) in conjunction with an oral presentation of each to the program attending, followed by review of each report by the program attending.
2. Demonstrate understanding of DSM5 diagnostic criteria for major psychiatric disorders as part of a complete differential diagnosis.
3.  Learn common treatment modalities for 2-3 major psychiatric disorders.
4.  Observe command and community psychiatric consultations while shadowing military psychiatrists within and outside of the clinic and hospital setting at Ft. Benning.
