FLB 114 Growth and Development

This course emphasizes the basic concepts of cellular and somatic growth, with heavy emphasis on the osseous and cartilaginous craniofacial complex. Control mechanisms of growth, timing of growth from birth through old age, growth centers and sites, and patterns of growth (e.g., cartilaginous vs. intramembranous) are covered. The clinical application of these principles is discussed in the classroom and in treatment planning seminars. This course is also designed to teach the genetic basis for normal/abnormal growth and development, and the embryological stages of human development. Students demonstrate their understanding of these concepts during grand rounds with orthodontic staff members at the Wilford Hall Ambulatory Surgical Center (WHASC) Craniofacial Anomaly Board.
