MPO 539 Cognitive Psychology

Cognition is the study of the mind and how it processes information. The course will outline the principle methods used to study human cognition: Experimental Cognitive Psychology; Cognitive Neuropsychology; Computational Cognitive Science; Cognitive Neuroscience. The course will also provide a brief overview of the history of cognitive psychology. The course will then cover the role of cognitive processes in decision making, expertise, and emotion. A central theme will be the role of cognitive biases in decision making and emotion. Cognitive Bias Modification will also be covered. By the end of the course attendees will be able to: 1) Understand the methods used in contemporary cognitive psychological research; 2) Appreciate the role of automatic cognitive processes in decision making (to include cognitive biases) and skill; 3) Appreciate the role of cognitive biases in emotion and psychopathology.
