HPE 804 Advanced Instruction and Curriculum Development in HPE

This course will expand upon the principles discussed in MHPE Instructional Methods (HPE 555) and Curriculum Development (HPE 565) courses. In particular, the course will examine contemporary concepts, methods (individuals and programs), and theory that enhance the creation of effective instruction in and evaluation of health professions education, with an emphasis on practical application.

Learning Objectives

  1. Discuss the relative strengths, weaknesses, and utility of specific instructional methods, curriculum design, and assessment techniques.
  2. Apply theories of learning, evaluation, and instructional design principles to create novel teaching environments that they intend to use at their institution.
  3. Discuss the various methods of delivering course material to learners at distant sites including computer-based formats, streaming videos, and other options.
  4. Choose the most effective learning and assessment methods based on intended learning outcomes, available resources, theory, and curriculum development principles.
  5. Discuss system principles and their practical application.
