OTA 2206 Mental Health in Occupational Therapy

Mental Health in Occupational Therapy (OT) explores the vital role of occupational therapy assistants in supporting the mental health and well-being of individuals across varied settings. Students will develop a foundational understanding of behavioral health, including common psychopathologies and their impact on occupational performance. Through examination of specific OT assessments and interventions, students will learn how to facilitate client engagement in meaningful activities that promote recovery and improve daily living skills and functional independence. Topics covered include an introduction to behavioral health, psychopathology and function, specialized assessments, case study analysis, evidence-based interventions, group dynamics, stress management techniques, sleep hygiene, life skills development, and the unique needs of active-duty military and veterans experiencing combat and operational stress. The course emphasizes the application of purposeful activity to enhance client participation, independence, and overall quality of life in the context of mental health disorders.


Building upon foundational knowledge, this course provides practical experience in applying occupational therapy principles within behavioral health contexts. Students will delve into case studies, develop intervention plans, and explore effective techniques for addressing various mental health challenges. Emphasis is placed on understanding group dynamics and implementing group interventions focused on stress management, sleep hygiene, and essential life skills.
