OTA 2208 Wellness and Health Promotion
This course, Wellness and Health Promotion, explores the expanding role of Occupational Therapy Assistants (OTAs) in proactive healthcare. Students will examine the foundations of occupational therapy's contribution to health promotion and disease prevention, learning to design, implement, and evaluate effective wellness programs across diverse populations and settings. Topics covered include instructional design principles for client education, strategies for promoting mental readiness and cognitive enhancement, and the development of health promotion programs addressing physical, mental, and social well-being. This foundational knowledge will prepare students to empower individuals and communities to adopt healthy lifestyles and participate fully in meaningful occupations. More specifically, in context of the military environment, it prepares the OTA to provide interventions related to operational readiness and performance optimization.
Building upon the principles of health promotion, this course also delves into the essential business and leadership skills necessary for OTAs to effectively manage and advocate for wellness initiatives. Students will explore the operational aspects of healthcare, including program management, budgeting, marketing, and advocacy. Furthermore, the course emphasizes the development of leadership qualities essential for successful collaboration, supervision, and advancement within the evolving landscape of healthcare and wellness promotion. Students will gain practical skills and knowledge to become effective leaders and advocates for occupational therapy’s vital role in preventative healthcare.
