OTA 2407 Occupational Therapy Throughout the Lifespan

This course provides a comprehensive overview of occupational therapy practice across the lifespan, from pediatric to geriatric populations, equipping future occupational therapy assistants (OTAs) with the foundational knowledge and skills necessary for effective client-centered intervention. Students will explore human development across the lifespan, including typical milestones and common challenges, and delve into the occupational therapy process, encompassing evaluation, intervention planning, and implementation. Specific topics covered include pediatric conditions, interventions for children and adolescents, adult and older adult populations, including those receiving palliative care, and specialized areas such as ergonomics, work assessments, low vision, cognition, chronic disease management, and community mobility. This course emphasizes the core values and principles of occupational therapy, fostering critical thinking and problem-solving skills essential for adapting interventions to meet the unique needs of individuals across various stages of life.


Building upon the fundamentals of occupational therapy practice, this course examines specific assessment and intervention strategies for various client populations and areas of practice. Students will learn to apply evidence-based techniques in evaluating and treating pediatric conditions, as well as addressing the needs of adults and older adults with diverse physical, cognitive, and psychosocial challenges. The course explores practical applications of occupational therapy in areas like ergonomics, work rehabilitation, low vision, and cognitive intervention, preparing students to contribute meaningfully to client well-being and promote occupational performance across the lifespan. Emphasis is placed on developing individualized intervention plans that consider the client's context, goals, and values, preparing graduates for collaborative practice within the interprofessional team.
