MLTS 1303 Introduction to Clinical Chemistry
This course provides a foundational transition from general and organic chemical principles to clinical laboratory applications. Students begin by analyzing the basic principles of general chemistry and the structural properties of organic compounds as they relate to biological systems. The curriculum progresses into the fundamentals of clinical biochemistry, with a specialized focus on acid-base theory, oxidation-reduction reactions, and the technical methodologies used in the modern clinical laboratory. Detailed instruction is provided on the principles of spectrophotometry, electrophoresis, chromatography, and immunoassays, as well as an introduction to Point of Care Testing (POCT). Students develop the technical proficiency required to perform analytical procedures and correlate chemical reactions with diagnostic methodologies.
