2021-2022 Academic Catalog

MED 3104 Sleep Medicine Selective

The sleep medicine selective occurs over four weeks, exposing students to a broad range of sleep pathologies. The rotation develops an understanding of the impact of sleep on academic performance and military readiness. Students will see outpatient and inpatient consults. Students will learn about sleep-disordered breathing, insomnia, sleep-related movement disorders, parasomnias, and hypersomnias. Students are also expected to learn appropriate patient selection and counseling to prescribe sedative-hypnotics and stimulants. Students will be expected to learn service-specific accession and retention standards relative to sleep disorders.  The interpretation of polysomnography and the use of remote digital tracking systems for sleep and sleep-disordered breathing will be incorporated into clinic visits. Students will be expected to learn the indications and appropriate use of Respiratory Assist Devices such as CPAP and BIPAP as they pertain to outpatients with chronic pulmonary-sleep overlap syndromes and stable hospitalized patients with chronic respiratory failure.  Participation in Sleep Academic conference, including presenting a Journal Club Presentation, Case Presentation, or Review of Literature, is required.
