2021-2022 Academic Catalog

MED 3200 Medicine Clerkship

Focused on care of adult patients and fostering clinical problem solving as they experience a wide variety of problems, allowing students to become clinicians who embrace complexity, yet act with simplicity. Growing independence and fulfilling the promise of duty and expertise represent the core goal. Students spend five weeks in the outpatient setting and five on an inpatient service, working directly with faculty in patient care. On the wards, students are junior members of teams with attending physicians, residents, and interns - actively participating in patient care, including nighttime and weekend call. All attend teaching conferences and work with preceptors in analysis and synthesis of clinical information. In both inpatient and outpatient settings, students are expected to become reliable “reporters” making the transition to active “interpreters” for their patients, and ultimately to “manager/educators.”
