2021-2022 Academic Catalog

RCC 4164 Oral Pathology/Oral Histology Seminar I

The course is designed to present a wide spectrum of disease processes that manifest in the oral and maxillofacial anatomic region.  The material will be presented in lecture blocks, each of 2 hours duration, and correlate to designated chapters in the text referenced below.  It is intended that the resident will be introduced to some new pathologic entities, but that much of the course material will represent a review of diseases previously studied elsewhere.  Emphasis will be placed on the clinical and radiographic manifestations of each condition; however, some correlation with microscopic findings is necessary to promote a better understanding of clinical behavior, treatment modalities, and prognosis of specific diseases.

Topics to be covered include: Developmental Defects of the Oral Maxillofacial Region, Abnormalities of Teeth, Benign/Malignant Epithelial Pathology, Benign Fibro-Osseous and Giant Cell Lesions, Benign/Malignant Bone Pathology, Odontogenic Cysts and Tumors, Benign/Malignant Salivary Gland Pathology, Benign/Malignant Soft Tissue Pathology, and Dermatologic Diseases.
