2023-2024 Academic Catalog

MED 3100 Aerospace Medicine Selective

The aerospace medicine selective occurs over four weeks and introduces students to aviation medicine pathology.  NAMI is the Navy’s center of excellence for Aerospace Medicine, located onboard NAS Pensacola, home to the Blue Angels. Students participate in daily EKG interpretation and weekly Residency in Aerospace Medicine academic conferences.  Additionally, students observe aerospace medical decision-making and deliberations at a weekly Clinical Advisory. At this meeting, students gain familiarity with physical standards for aviation and the waiver process.  Students rotate through aerospace medicine, internal medicine, mental health, ophthalmology, and neurology clinics during the rotation. While in the clinic, students will perform physical exams on aviation applicants and evaluate personnel for disqualifying conditions. Students will also learn to apply aerospace medicine theories to common medical problems.  Students will also spend time with a Squadron flight surgeon, at two operational training air wings. No rotations are available in Nov., Dec. or Jan.
