MED 3109 Rheumatology Selective
The rheumatology selective occurs over four weeks, exposing students to a broad range of autoimmune disorders. This rotation places emphasis on history taking and performing proper musculoskeletal examinations. The setting is primarily outpatient-based clinical experience that diagnoses and treats autoimmune inflammatory diseases in adults. At the end of the rotation, students will be able to identify and work up rheumatologic conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, seronegative spondyloarthritis, and systemic lupus erythematosus. They will also be familiar with managing common conditions seen in primary care, such as osteoarthritis, primary Raynaud’s phenomenon, and gout. Students will also have the opportunity to perform various joint, tendon sheath, and bursa injections. Students will present a rheumatologic disorders topic of their choice to the staff at the end of the rotation.
