2023-2024 Academic Catalog

MED 3110 Gastroenterology Selective

The gastroenterology selective occurs over four weeks, exposing students to a broad range of gastrointestinal and hepatopathology and preventative services. Students will become familiar with the diagnosis, management, and treatment plans for commonly seen gastrointestinal complaints of constipation, diarrhea, abdominal pain, rectal bleeding, GERD, dysphagia, and anemia. Students will also become familiar with commonly seen hepatology issues, including abnormal liver enzymes, fatty liver disease, Hepatitis B, and Hepatitis C.  Students will have the opportunity to observe the procedural aspects of gastroenterology, including esophagogastroduodenoscopy, colonoscopy, endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography, and endoscopic ultrasound. In addition to clinical care, students can expect to attend multidisciplinary conferences and present a topic of their choice at the end of the rotation to the clinic staff.
