PSY 3105 Adolescent Inpatient Psychiatry

This is an inpatient rotation that allows students to explore their interest in Adolescent Psychiatry, as well as learn important developmental influences on adult behavior. Students participate in teaching rounds, conferences, lectures/seminars under the supervision of the Child and Adolescent Faculty, Fellows, and Residents in the evaluation and management of adolescents presenting with behavioral health and family/social difficulties in the inpatient setting.

Goals and Objectives:

  1. Perform at least two comprehensive psychiatric assessments of adolescent inpatients, and submit a BRIEF but comprehensive written report for each (to include a defensible formulation, differential diagnosis, and treatment plan) in conjunction with an oral presentation of each to the program attending, followed by review of each report by the program attending.
  2. Demonstrate understanding of DSM5 diagnostic criteria for major adolescent psychiatric disorders as part of a complete differential diagnosis.
  3. Develop an understanding of the multidisciplinary approach to patient assessment, treatment planning, therapeutic interventions, and disposition planning.
  4. Learn common treatment modalities for adolescent psychiatric disorders.
