PSY 3200 Psychiatry Clerkship
In their daily work on inpatient, partial hospital, consultation-liaison, and/or outpatient services, students are supervised by psychiatry residents and staff. The department strongly emphasizes the bio-psychosocial model, integrating biological, psychological, and socio-cultural knowledge in understanding behavior and disease. The development of advanced clinical interviewing, diagnostic, and treatment planning skills is central to the clerkship. Particular attention is given to disorders associated with the unique and/or international focus of military medicine. Each student meets weekly with a senior clinician preceptor for review and discussion of case histories. Mandatory seminars and case conferences consider both practical and theoretical aspects of emotional disorders.
*National Capital Area (NCA) Slots: in the NCA, students “split” their rotations in half between inpatient psychiatry and consultation-liaison psychiatry. INPATIENT Psychiatry is completed over 2.5 weeks at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center (WRNMMC) - MD, Fort Belvoir Community Hospital (FBCH) - VA, OR at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center (DCVA) - in Washington, DC. ALL NCA rotations will also include 2.5 weeks at WRNMMC, so only a few students remain at Walter Reed throughout the five weeks.
