PSY 3345 Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) Selective
This course allows students to explore their interest in post-hospitalization and intensive outpatient Psychiatry. Students learn about providing psychiatric care in a Psychiatric Intensive Outpatient (IOP)/Partial Hospitalization Program (patients do not stay overnight on this service). They will perform initial intake assessments, obtain collateral information, and participate in group, individual, and team assessments and therapy, devise management plans, and follow ongoing treatment progress under resident and faculty supervision. A similar course is available to 4th year students, and 4th year students will be given more responsibility and independence than students on a clerkship-level rotation at this site.
Goals and Objectives:
- Participate in the comprehensive assessment and treatment of patients with behavioral, substance use and/or cognitive disorders who are enrolled in the WRNMMC Behavioral Health Intensive Outpatient Program;
- Develop an understanding of the multidisciplinary approach to patient assessment, treatment planning, therapeutic interventions, and disposition planning for patients in Intensive Outpatient programs;
- Submit at least two written BRIEF but comprehensive psychiatric assessments (to include a defensible formulation, differential diagnosis, and treatment plan) in conjunction with an oral presentation and review of each report by the program attending.
