MPO 562 Cognitive Behavioral Therapy II

MPO562 is an intermediate course that builds on your foundational understanding of cognitive behavior therapy (CBT), case formulation, and therapeutic techniques. MPO561 (CBT I) is a prerequisite for this course. Students will gain the skills necessary to integrate and to apply cognitive behavioral theory, principles, and techniques to address a number of psychiatric conditions among adults and couples. Students will continue to use the Cognitive Therapy Rating Scale (CTRS) to measure treatment fidelity and to use in the context of cognitive behavior therapy supervision. By the end of the course, students will be able to: 1) Demonstrate a more in-depth understanding of the theoretical principles of CBT; 2) Show advanced proficiency in the usage of basic CBT skills, i.e., collaborative empiricism, continuous assessment, psychoeducation, session structuring, assigning & monitoring homework, and establishing therapeutic alliance with patients; 3) Generate comprehensive cognitive-behavioral case conceptualizations for patients seen at practicum settings in order to guide with treatment planning; 4) Show advanced proficiency in the usage of CBT skills (e.g., Socratic questioning, guided discovery, identification and modification of automatic thoughts and core beliefs, behavioral activation, activity scheduling, coping card construction, and relaxation training); 5) Discuss the current empirical research on the efficacy and effectiveness of CBT for various diagnostic categories; 6) Demonstrate understanding of CBT empirically-supported protocols for the treatment of a number of psychiatric problems (e.g., posttraumatic stress disorder, suicide) and the ability to implement CBT techniques as outlined in at least several of these protocols; 7) Adapt existing evidence-based CBT strategies to best meet the needs of diverse patients.
