Cardiovascular Technology, A.S.

Overview

The Associate of Science in Cardiovascular Technology degree is designed to prepare cardiovascular technologists and diagnostic medical sonographers who are competent in the cognitive (knowledge), psychomotor (skills), and affective (behavior) learning domains to enter the profession of Invasive Cardiovascular Technology. As allied health professionals, cardiovascular technologists play a vital role in assisting physicians with the diagnosis and interventional treatment of patients suffering from cardiac and peripheral vascular disease. The program offers a robust curriculum that provides both simulated and real-world training in all aspects of cardiovascular medicine, from invasive cardiology (cardiac catheterization, electrophysiology) to non-invasive cardiology (echocardiography, electrocardiography). Coursework includes anatomy and physiology, chemistry, physics, pharmacology, electrocardiography, and advanced techniques in echocardiography and cardiac catheterization. The program places a strong emphasis on quality control and safety and also provides instruction in medical ethics and patient care. Instruction is delivered through a blend of group-paced lectures, demonstrations, online materials, and lab practice. A comprehensive pre-clinical review prepares students for clinical training, which takes place at military or civilian treatment facilities and includes hands-on instruction in both invasive and non-invasive cardiovascular medicine.

Accreditation or Related Information: The Cardiovascular Technologist Program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (WWW.CAAHEP.ORG) upon the recommendations of the Joint Review Committee on Education in Cardiovascular Technology (WWW.JRCCVT.ORG). Programmatic accreditation is maintained through the Medical Education Training Campus (METC).
