NURS 5400 Operational Readiness: Maritime Prolonged Field Care and Dive Medicine
Students will receive advanced operational readiness content and skills related to maritime medicine, water rescue, high-angle extraction from the maritime environment, underwater diving operations, hyperbaric medicine and pulmonary injury, prolonged maritime field care, treatment of traumatic and neurologic injuries, and first responder aid, as well as develop self-awareness relating to the types of stressors in an austere maritime environment. Students will receive internationally recognized certifications in basic open-water diving, advanced open diving, and water rescue.
Corequisite
Good academic standing in all didactic courses and satisfactory clinical performance as determined by GSN faculty and the Program Director is required. Each student will work with their respective program faculty to identify an appropriate course date, and endorsement must be obtained from a faculty sponsor, the relevant Program Director, and the GSN Commandant via a Brigade Clearance Form provided by the Operation Training Coordinator.

- Demonstrate effective communication between medical and nonmedical personnel to streamline patient care and movement in an operational environment.
- Demonstrate knowledge and critical thinking in the delivery of healthcare to the maritime patient immediately after injury, including rescue and recovery, in addition to prolonged casualty care in an austere operational environment.
- Demonstrate proper technique for pertinent skills as they relate to patient care and movement in a maritime environment, including but not limited to: dive planning, SCUBA skills, maritime physics, and clinical care.
- Enhance participants’ emotional and mental resiliency through exposure to high stress maritime conditions as they may be encountered in real world operations.
